Our distributors play a very important role in delivering a great product to our customers. Here are a few frequently asked questions that we get from new prospective distributors and that our current distributors receive from their customers:

Fresh Pack

Inquiries

  • All Prairie Gold Produce fresh pack potatoes are non-genetically modified.

  • Yes!  Prairie Gold Produce works hard to source additional potatoes from 20-30 of the best potato farms in Western Canada.  You can be guaranteed their fresh pack potatoes and potato granules are 100% Canadian.  Prairie Gold Produce offers Certificates of Origin when requested.

  • Our fresh potatoes are packed in 5lb, 10lb and 20lb poly bags. They also pack in 50lb cartons for food service applications or 50 lbs. bags for food distributors.

  • Russets are our primary potato we use, which range from Russet Burbanks to Russet Norkotahs.

Potato Granule

Inquiries

  • Prairie Gold Produce uses mainly Russet Burbank potatoes to manufacture their potato granules.

Other manufacturers use a mixture of RUSSETS and additional potato varieties which contribute to the ‘gluey’ texture that most potato granules have when they’re prepared.

At Prairie Gold Produce, we’ve invested a lot a time and money into purchasing custom equipment and honing their manufacturing processes which has allowed them to perfect their potato granules.

Prairie Gold potato granules have the same consistency and texture as freshly made mashed potatoes once prepared and result in crispier baked and fried products when used as a coating and moister and less dense food when added as a filling.

  • The potato granules are bulk packed into either multiwall paper bags with a polyethylene liner that contain 25 kg of potato granules.

Or, we also have tote bags that hold 1000kg.

Depending on volume, we can also work with you to repackage our granules into smaller, Prairie Gold Produce retail sized packaging or into your own, privately labeled granules for CPG.

  • Yes.  Although Prairie Gold Produces does not have peanuts, tree nuts or other nuts or their derivatives, sesame seeds, dairy products, egg, soy, wheat, corn or their derivatives, fish, shellfish, or crustaceans present in any products in our manufacturing facilities, we do use sulphites as a shelf life preservative, so products may contain Sodium Metabisulphate.

  • The potato granules have a shelf-life of almost 2 years and they do not require refrigeration but should be stored in a dry, air tight container.

  • A specialty run is when the line at the Prairie Gold Produce dehydration facility is flushed and when an adapted product (like a reduced preservation blend) is put in the line.

Afterwards the line gets flushed again and they proceed with our regular products.

General Consumer

Inquiries About

Potatoes

  • The vitamins in potatoes are sensitive to heat, air, light and water which means that ideally, the potatoes would be stored in a cool, dark and dry place.

A temperature of 7 C degrees is ideal to store potatoes (the average temperature in a refrigerator is 4 C degrees). If potatoes are stored in an area that’s too cool, they’ll dry up faster, conversely, an area that’s too warm will lead the potatoes sprouting and getting soft.

If you don’t have an ideal storage solution, we recommend purchasing potatoes in a smaller quantity so they’ll get eaten while they’re still in perfect condition!

  • Most potatoes are washed and dried prior to being delivered to retailers so they typically just need a quick rinse immediately before you’re going to use them.

Dampness can cause potatoes to get soft and start to decay so it’s best not to wash them before storing.

  • Potatoes are actually a very healthy food.  They’re full of vitamins and minerals and have proven health benefits.

Potatoes can get a bad reputation when they’re deep fried or loaded with cheese, butter, sour cream, bacon and other toppings.

The actual potato is 100% fat free and cholesterol free!  Try using herbs and broth to make your mashed potatoes healthier or opt for baked fries and potato chips.

For more info on how potatoes are nutritious, read our latest blog article here.

  • Most of the nutrients in a potato are found in the skin so try to eat them with the skins on whenever possible.

Baking or steaming is the best way to keep the nutrients high.  If you steam or boil the potatoes, think about using the residual water to add to gravies or to moisten mashed potatoes.  This will give you even more vitamins and minerals!

  • When you buy local, you’re also supporting local potato farmers and their families which means that you’re also investing in your local economy and preserving farmland for the future.

Prairie Gold Produce thanks you for buying local!
